Homecoming & the Story of the Mums: Boerne's 2026 Guide

September17, 2026 | Saige Diaz

Homecoming season is coming to Boerne — which means Friday night lights, school spirit, dances, parades and, of course, MUMS!

Homecoming is a longtime tradition centered around welcoming alumni back to their school while current students celebrate with football games, pep rallies, spirit days, dances and other festivities.

And here in Texas, there's another homecoming tradition that's pretty hard to miss: the mum.

If You're Not From Texas...

If you're like me and didn't grow up here, the whole mum craze around homecoming might feel a little foreign.

The first time you see one, you might even wonder: What IS that thing?! 😂

But mums have become one of the most recognizable Texas homecoming traditions, and there's actually quite a bit of history behind them.

The Story Behind Homecoming Mums

Homecoming traditions in the United States stretch back to the early 1900s, when schools and universities began holding celebrations that welcomed alumni back to campus.

Chrysanthemums eventually became a popular homecoming corsage. In the early days, a mum was exactly what it sounds like: a real chrysanthemum decorated with a few ribbons and pinned to a student's clothing.

They were simple tokens of affection, friendship and school spirit.

Then Texas took the tradition and, well... made it Texas-sized. 🤠

Over the decades, fresh chrysanthemums gave way to artificial flowers, while the decorations became bigger, longer and much more elaborate.

Today's homecoming mums can include:

  • Silk chrysanthemums
  • Ribbons in school colors
  • Student names and graduation years
  • School mascots
  • Sports and activity decorations
  • Bells and charms
  • Braided ribbons
  • Rhinestones and glitter
  • Feathers
  • Lights
  • Stuffed animals and other personalized trinkets

Some mums reach all the way to the floor, while elaborate senior mums can cover much of the front of the body.

What started as a flower has essentially become wearable art — and a uniquely Texas way to celebrate homecoming.

Meet One of Boerne's Mum-Making Stars

Misty Stout — That's What She Said Mums, Boerne

What started as a mom helping her son with a special homecoming tradition grew into one of Boerne's local mum-making businesses.

Misty Stout, alongside her husband Chris and a close circle of friends, creates hundreds of custom mums and garters each homecoming season, bringing plenty of school spirit — and sparkle — to students around town.

How It All Began

Back in 2017, Misty's oldest son was in sixth grade and eager to join in on the homecoming excitement.

In middle school, the tradition was simple: you bought a girl a mum and sat near her at the football game.

Knowing his mom was crafty, he asked her to make one.

She gave it a try — and before long, word spread.

That first year, Misty made about 25 mums, grateful that anyone trusted her with the task.

"It didn't take long for me to realize that buying supplies in bulk and getting a tax ID for wholesale was the way to go," Misty says. "What began as a little project turned into a real business."

Looking back, she admits she cringes a little at some of those earliest creations, but each one was part of the journey.

Today, Misty and her team create custom mums and garters that can incorporate a student's school colors, name, sports, activities, interests and other personal touches.

It's one of those small businesses that feels especially fitting for Boerne — something that started with a mom making something special for her own child and grew through word of mouth in the community.

Senior Year Favorites

Of all the mums she makes, senior mums hold a special place in Misty’s heart. “It’s the last homecoming of your high school years,” she says. “I encourage families to splurge a little, add personal touches, and create something worth keeping forever.”

Advice for First-Timers

For parents stepping into the world of mums for the first time, Misty offers reassurance:

  • Start small. Especially for middle schoolers, there are many years ahead for bigger and flashier designs.
  • Don’t wait on a boy. “As a mom of six boys, I say this with love: get the mum you want, and we’ll toss his name on it later if needed. It’s 2025 — waiting around is old news!”

Heather & Misty

Remembering Heather McCoy of CraftWerks Ribbon

No story about homecoming mums in Boerne would be complete without remembering Heather McCoy, owner of CraftWerks Ribbon.

For years, Heather and CraftWerks were part of homecoming season in our community.

Whether families were looking for ribbons and supplies to create their own mum or needed a little inspiration and help along the way, CraftWerks became a familiar local name during this very Texas tradition.

Heather passed away in 2025, but the creativity, relationships and traditions she helped foster continue to be part of Boerne's homecoming story.

As we highlight the local makers carrying on the mum tradition today, we also want to remember someone who helped make homecoming a little more special for so many Boerne families.

Thank you, Heather, for the creativity and joy you shared with our community. 💗🎀

Want to Make Your Own Mum?

You absolutely can!

In fact, making your own can become part of the homecoming tradition itself.

Grab your school colors, ribbons, bells, charms, flowers and a hot glue gun and create something completely personal.

And don't feel like it has to be HUGE.

A smaller mum can be just as special, especially for younger students. Then, if they want to go all-out later, they can save the giant creation for senior year. 😉

A Texas Tradition Made Local

Homecoming mums may be a Texas tradition, but one of our favorite parts is seeing how Boerne families and local makers make it their own.

Behind so many of these creations is a local mom, artist, florist or small-business owner spending hours cutting ribbon, making braids, adding tiny details and creating something a student will remember long after the football game is over.

And that's what makes shopping locally for a mum even more special.

You're not only participating in a Texas tradition — you're supporting someone right here in our Boerne community.

Are you a Boerne-area mum maker taking orders for 2026? 🎀

We know there are talented makers working from their homes and small businesses throughout our community, and we'd love to continue adding them to this guide.
